Facebook-Friendly Nokia Asha 501 Debuts

Nokia introduced the first model of its new family of Asha smartphones, the Nokia Asha 501, and the handset maker teamed up with Facebook and mobile carrier Airtel to announced that the latter’s customers in Africa and India would receive data-free access to the Facebook application and m.facebook.com for a limited time.

Facebook Vice President of Corporate Development Vaughn Smith said:

This bundle is a great way to discover Facebook on your Nokia Asha and enjoy the experience for longer without worrying about data charges. Working in close partnership with Nokia and global operators made this offer possible, and we’re excited to help connect the world on Facebook.

Features of the Nokia Asha 501 include:

  • Two main screens: Home, a traditional, icon-based view; and Fastlane, which is customized based on how the phone is used and offers easy access to favorite features and apps.
  • Availability in single or EasySwap Dual SIM models.
  • A two-part design: a removable casing and scratch-resistant glass display.
  • Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.
  • A three-inch touch screen and a single back button.
  • A choice of six colors — bright red, bright green, cyan, yellow, white, and black.
  • Pre-loaded Nokia Xpress Browser.
