Facebook Restores Access To Tumblr Page Obama Is Checking Your Email, Blames Automated Response

With the uproar over the National Security Agency’s Prism initiative, in which the NSA allegedly obtained direct access to the servers of Internet companies including Facebook, Google, Apple, Microsoft, Yahoo, PalTalk, Skype, and AOL, those companies are likely facing heightened scrutiny, despite firm denials by Facebook and by its co-founder and CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, of any knowledge of or participation in Prism. A few eyebrows were likely raised over the weekend, when access to Tumblr page Obama Is Checking Your Email was being blocked by the social network, but the situation has been rectified.

Reader Matteo Gamba of Wimdu shared the screenshot below with AllFacebook, in which he was asked to input a captcha prior to accessing the Tumblr. Even after doing so, clicking on the link resulted in only a blank page.

Obama Is Checking Your Email features photos of President Barack Obama using devices including desktop and laptop computers, mobile phones, and tablets, and the page pokes fun at the other privacy controversy of last week — reports that the NSA was collecting the Verizon Communications phone records of millions of customers under a top-secret court order issued in April.

Fred Wolens of Facebook’s policy communications department said in an email to AllFacebook that the blocking of the Obama Is Checking Your Email Tumblr was “an automated response by our spam prevention systems,” and access to the site was manually restored.
