Dr. Mark Plunkett Backs Cholesterol Screening for Kids as Part of a Program for Lifestyle Change

Dr. Mark Plunkett has been a pediatric heart surgeon for 17 years. While he often helps children with genetic heart problems, he finds that more and more he’s seeing kids developing the early stages of heart problems that are usually found in adults. Plunkett says that there is a dangerous rise in obesity-related heart problems for kids – both in his practice and on a national level.

The percentage of children with high cholesterol levels is soaring according to a study of more than 12,000 children aged 9-11 presented at the American College of Cardiology’s annual conference.  In this study, 30% of the children had borderline or abnormal cholesterol levels.
