Facebook Asks Politicians What They Could Do With 1 Billion Connections

Facebook recently celebrated a major milestone: 1 billion users. On Friday, the social network reached out to some of the most influential Facebook users in politics, asking lawmakers what they could do with the unified force of 1 billion people.

Here are some selected responses:

Antonio Villaraigosa, Mayor of Los Angeles:

One billion minds mean the power to bypass the entrenched ideology of the left and the right. By linking 1 billion citizens, we can realize the dream of a true radical center and one that takes on the big challenges and solves the real problems across the world.

Kevin McCarthy, Majority Whip, U.S. House of Representatives:

I’d open government data and see what great ideas and innovations for a more efficient, effective, smarter, and smaller government the crowd could come up with; then work to get those government reforms passed, signed and implemented.

Nancy Pelosi, Minority Leader, U.S. House of Representatives:

One billion means we have the power to change the world we live in. If I could communicate to all of them, my message would be to take some time to translate your online engagement into offline activism, go vote, run for office, or serve your community.

John Boehner, Speaker, U.S. House of Representatives:

One billion means yet another illustration of the nearly unlimited potential of digital media. News, views, and information can now move in ways never thought possible. Used responsibly, it can be an unprecedented tool for the exchange of knowledge and truth in our world.

Cathy McMorris Rodgers, Congresswoman:

In the U.S., Facebook has enabled elected officials to stay connected with the people we represent on a scale never before possible. Globally, Facebook has also become a force for change in the world, unleashing free minds and free markets to achieve new potential.
