Publishers Clearing House Uses Facebook To ‘Give Back’

Multichannel direct-marketing outfit Publishers Clearing House announced the launch of its second “The Give Back” charitable-giving program on Facebook Tuesday, with the campaign set to run through Nov. 5.

Facebook users who like the PCH Facebook page can vote once daily for three charities, with the first-place charity receiving $50,000 at the end of the campaign, $35,000 going to the second-place finisher, and $25,000 to the charity that finishes third. The three charities in this year’s The Give Back initiative are:

  • St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, which aims to find cures for children battling cancer and other deadly diseases, relying on donations to ensure that no family ever pays St. Jude for anything.
  • Susan G. Komen for the Cure, which works to end breast cancer in the U.S. and throughout the world via research, community health outreach, advocacy, and programs in more than 30 countries.
  • The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, which works to provide effective means for the prevention of cruelty to animals.

PCH said it will not display a running vote tally throughout the campaign, so when it embarks on its charity tour Nov. 8 to distribute the funds, the three charities will not know where they placed.

PCH Executive Vice President Deborah Holland said:

Our founders established a heritage of charitable giving that continues on more than 50 years after the company was started. Today our customers and entrants enjoy interacting with the PCH brand on Facebook, and The Give Back is a perfect way for us to engage them, as well as raise awareness for three important causes. This program puts our community in control of an impactful decision, and it will be a lot of fun for everyone who gets involved.

Danielle Lam of the PCH Prize Patrol added:

Our jobs are to help make dreams come true, and we work hard to do this every single day. To be able to do this for charities helping those in need is truly amazing. But we also know how much our fans love to win, so we’re sweetening the deal and giving away a $500 cash prize every time we hit 5,000 votes. Basically, the more votes we get, the more money we’ll be giving away to fans.
