Some of the latest analysis of the 2012 election through the lens of social media shows that Republican candidate Mitt Romney has been gaining popularity on Facebook recently, while President Barack Obama hasn’t had much growth in the like category.
Romney’s Facebook page shows quite the upward-tending graph, in terms of likes. SocialBakers, a social media analytics firm, notes that Romney has gained 11.8 percent more fans in the past 30 days. In contrast, Obama has grown by just 1.7 percent.
Romney’s best social network day recently? June 18, when he gained 24,665 fans. The best day for the incumbent president? May 31, when Obama gained 29,733 new fans. Both candidates have seen increases in mentions on Facebook.
However, on pure numbers, Obama is winning the Facebook race. As of Wednesday, the president has more than 27 million Facebook fans — most of whom are between 18 and 24 years old. Romney has nearly 2 million fans, and is most popular with the 45- to 54-year-old age bracket.

Some of the most popular items on Romney’s and Obama’s walls are photos with a short message. They are easy to produce (just a picture and a sentence), but often get the biggest reaction. For example, on Father’s Day, Obama posted: “President Obama on being a dad: “My hardest but always my most rewarding job.” It was a simple message with a huge payoff – more than 207,000 people liked it, more than 7,000 commented on it, and 10,000 people shared it. The shares are perhaps the most important because every time someone shares something on their Facebook wall, it exposes the candidate to more users and, possibly, more likes.
