Facebook Eyes Second Building At Data Center In Altoona, Iowa

AltoonaElectricalRoom650It’s take two for Facebook in Altoona, Iowa, as the social network announced plans for a second building for its data center there.

Facebook said in a note on its Altoona Data Center page that its plans will be reviewed by the City of Altoona Planning and Zoning Board Tuesday, and by the Altoona City Council May 5, with groundbreaking on the new building shortly thereafter, barring issues.

The social network added in the note:

A little more than a year ago, we announced that Altoona would be the home for our newest data center. Since then, more than 460 people, mostly from the central Iowa region, have worked every day on the project, logging more than 435,000 hours in the ongoing construction of the 476,000-square-foot building. We couldn’t be more pleased by the progress we’ve made, and we’re grateful for the kindness we’ve received from our friends and neighbors here in Altoona.

Altoona 2 is expected to be roughly the same size and layout as our first building. Once the Altoona site is up and running, it will join our other data centers in Prineville, Ore.; Forest City, N.C.; and Luleå, Sweden, as some of the most advanced and energy-efficient facilities in the world.

With the support of the terrific partners we’ve found here in Iowa, Altoona will also be part of the cutting-edge infrastructure that will soon play a crucial role in connecting billions around the world. We’re thrilled to be here and investing further in this great community.
