Facebook is officially introducing a feature it has toyed with in simpler form in the past, as the social network announced the launch of Nearby Friends in a Newsroom post, saying that it will be available to U.S. Android and iPhone users “in the coming weeks.”
BlackBerry users can now download an update to their Facebook applications, Facebook v10.2.0 for BlackBerry 10, which brings a redesigned News Feed, as well as several improvements to the process of uploading and viewing photos.
Working out is becoming a more social experience, with Facebook friends offering support on a tough hill or the homestretch. Endomondo knows this, as the application recently deepened its Facebook integration to include the ability to tag friends, as well as to post photos and status updates once the workout is done.
While the Facebook applications for iOS and Android are updated with regularity, BlackBerry doesn’t get the same love. The company announced Thursday that the Facebook and Twitter apps for the BlackBerry 10 phone were updated. Now the Facebook app has the technology to let you know if friends are nearby, as well as better photo and event features.
With all of the hype about the iPhone 5 and Facebook’s renewed focus on Android, it’s easy for BlackBerry’s newest release to get lost in the noise. The BlackBerry 10 was announced during a recent conference in San Jose, Calif. The new phone will have a native Facebook application, as well as (finally) timeline.
