Boomerang, which allows users to give gifts to their Facebook friends, announced Monday that 1 million gifts have been claimed on the platform. Three-quarters of the gifts were distributed through Boomerang’s brand offerings, which are free, nominal-value gift cards from major and small brands.
Boomerang, a platform that allows people to give locally-specialized gifts to Facebook friends, has expanded their services, launching a rewards program — Boomerang Rewards. This allows brands to treat their fans for spreading the word and sharing gifts.
As Facebook looks for ways to monetize its presence, the company rolled out Gifts earlier this year — a program that is now available to all U.S. users. But Facebook wasn’t the first, and certainly won’t be the last, to test the social gift market. Several other companies — such as Plumfare, Boomerang, Treater, and GiftHit — use Facebook to deliver experiences that can’t be captured with gift cards.
Social gifting, which is becoming wildly popular on Facebook, has largely been conducted through gift cards and major retailers. Boomerang wants to make social gifting a local experience. The Chicago-based program is expanding to New York, Indianapolis, and Austin, Texas, offering small businesses and local retailers a chance to get in on the social gifting fun.
