Facebook really wants messages to be like email. The social network announced Wednesday that it is testing some changes to make its messages feature look a little more like email.

This morning many Facebook users were shocked to find that their profile boxes had disappeared completely. While some users are hailing the return of the boxes to their profiles as a victory for those who spoke out against the change, Facebook has confirmed that the change is temporary. Profile boxes will be removed shortly, and next time it will be permanent. For those who want their profile boxes back, you’ll have to continue protesting as Facebook has no intent to keep the boxes within profiles for an extended period of time.

While Facebook previously announced to developers that application profile boxes would no longer be allowed, many users were taken off guard as application boxes began disappearing from their profiles yesterday afternoon. While the volume of complaints was not that extreme, many users continued to complain and demand that Facebook return the boxes. While we’re not quite sure how many users were interacting with application boxes, it’s safe to say that millions of users had them installed on their profile.
