Social media users love Dove, as Unilever’s personal-care-product line finished atop the debut edition of The Love List, a new monthly report from social relationship platform Hootsuite that uses data from its uberVU unit to rank more than 450 of the top brands globally.

Facebook revealed during its third-quarter earnings call Tuesday that $2.96 billion of its $3.2 billion in revenue for the three-month period came from advertising, so it’s no surprise that the bulk of the call was devoted to advertising, as well. Mobile ad budgets on Facebook and Twitter among the clients of Ampush, a Facebook Strategic Preferred Marketing Developer, were up 87 percent in the third quarter of 2014 compared with the second quarter of the year, and a whopping 233 percent versus the prior-year quarter, according to the social technology company’s latest study.
Advocate marketing platform Crowdly, which refers to itself as the “after-like marketing firm,” announced the launch of its Crowdly 2.0 platform, which it said “provides actionable ways for leading brands and their agencies to surface, identify and build relationships with their best fans– driving advocacy, brand loyalty and sales.”
Social marketing platform Shift, a Facebook Preferred Marketing Developer, examined campaigns on the social network during the second quarter that were managed via its Facebook ad solution, and it shared its findings in the infographic below.
One of the most common objectives of Facebook ads is increasing brand awareness, and the social network’s marketing science team enlisted the help of more than 700 users from all around the world to evaluate more than 1,500 News Feed ads between October 2013 and this past March, from more than 350 campaigns. It may be too early to say that Facebook is cleaning up with its premium video ads, but the social network did land the Dove personal care product line from Unilever as a client, marking the first foray into the nascent sector by a consumer-packaged-goods company.
Legend has it that when famous bank robber Willie Sutton was asked why he targeted banks, he replied, “Because that’s where the money is,” and the same logic applies to why Facebook’s quarterly earnings calls devote so much time to advertising. The social network’s first-quarter earnings call Wednesday was no exception.
Ad revenue accounted for $2.34 billion of Facebook’s fourth-quarter-2013 revenue total of $2.59 billion, so it’s no surprise that the social network’s advertising results and initiatives were the topic of the lion’s share of discussion during its earnings call Wednesday.
