Aude Hofleitner, Ta Virot Chiraphadhanakul, and Bogdan State of the Facebook Data Science Team tapped into the social network’s wealth of information to examine what they call coordinated migration, when a significant number of users moved from one city to another, by analyzing aggregate, anonymized data on all users who list both their hometowns and current cities on their profiles.
Facebook Weekly Highlights features photos posted to the social network by celebrities and athletes. This week’s edition featured the photo to the right, of endurance swimmer Diana Nyad celebrating in Key West after completing a record-breaking swim from Cuba to the U.S.; as well as the trunk of skateboarding legend Tony Hawk (below) prior to Labor Day weekend, filled with, oddly enough, skateboards.
Most likely, Facebook will reach the one-billion member threshold sometime during 2012. One seventh of the world’s population will be on the social network.
Now circulating virally: “The Cyber Police in Cuba,” a video of a lecture that appears to be directed at Cuban officials, asking them to be extremely wary of social media.
This weekend, Cuba denounced Facebook for shutting down Cubadebate’s fan page. Soon after the media got wind of the denunciation, the social media site restored the account.
