Every operations staffer at one of Facebook’s data centers can manage at least 20,000 servers, with some handling as many as 26,000, Facebook Director of Data Center Operations Delfina Eberly said during her keynote speech Tuesday at the 7×24 Exchange 2013 Fall Conference, as reported by Data Center Knowledge.

Facebook reported its third-quarter earnings at the close of business Wednesday, posting revenue of $2.02 billion, up 60 percent from $1.26 billion in the year-earlier quarter, and GAAP (generally accepted accounting principles) net income of $425 million, or $0.17 per share, compared with a net loss of $59 million (-$0.02) in the third quarter of 2012.
Facebook announced the introduction of monthly active users and daily active users metrics by country, for both desktop and mobile, with a particular focus on DAUs.

Facebook reached 1.15 billion monthly active users as of June 30, up 21 percent compared with the second quarter of 2012, while daily active users were up 27 percent to 699 million, and mobile MAUs leaped by 51 percent to 819 million, the company reported as part of its second-quarter financial results.
Facebook’s total monthly active users and daily active users continued to trend upward in the first quarter of 2013, reaching 1.11 billion and 665 million, respectively, as of March 31, but growth in the core markets of the U.S. and Canada has slowed considerably, with the bulk of new MAUs and DAUs coming from Asia and the rest of the world, not including Europe.
In February, the business, tech, and social media industries were abuzz with the results of a study by the Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project, during which it was revealed that in America, “droves of users” were taking breaks from Facebook. In the days that followed, the headlines worried about the fact that 27 percent of people were planning on taking a break from the world’s largest and supposedly most popular networking site.
There were more than 50 million Facebook pages with at least 10 likes as of Dec. 31, 2012, and some 10 million applications were using the social network’s platform, according to its annual form 10-K filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission following the release of its fourth-quarter earnings report last week.
It’s not just Instagram: Facebook plans to change the way all applications are measured. In a post on its developer blog Wednesday, Facebook noted that instead of revealing specific metrics such as apps’ actual monthly active user and daily active user totals, the social network will instead rank apps and place them in tiers.
