Facebook Responds To Data Use Policy Vote, Confirms Changes

Even though an overwhelming majority of voters wanted Facebook to keep its current data use policy and statement of rights and responsibilities, which would allow users to vote on changes, less than 1 percent of Facebook’s user base actually made their voices official — far short of the 30 percent needed to push the vote to favor the users. Facebook will instead implement a system where users can comment and discuss changes, with the company taking users’ sentiments into consideration.

Less Than 1 Million Facebook Users Voted On Policy Changes

Facebook asked users to vote on whether or not they should be able to vote on future changes to the policy that governs what the company does with users’ data. To keep the old process of voting in place, 30 percent of Facebook’s 1 billion-strong user base had to vote for that, but it appears that less than 1 million officially voiced their opinions. However, those who have voted clearly want to keep the status quo.

Early Voting Results Show That Facebook Users Don’t Want Policy Changes

Facebook is proposing significant changes to its data use policy and statement of rights and responsibilities (namely the ability to vote on future privacy policy alterations), allowing users to vote for or against the changes. Users have until noon PT Dec. 10 to vote. While it would take a massive effort — 30 percent of Facebook’s 1 billion user base — to strike down the changes, it doesn’t take political stat wiz Nate Silver to predict where voters’ minds are: against.

Only 0.038 Percent Of Facebook Users Vote On Proposed Policy Changes

A total of 342,632 responses to a poll on Facebook would normally be considered an impressive tally, but when that 342,632 represents 0.038 percent of the social network’s 900 million-plus users, or 1 out of every 2,600, it’s not very impressive. And when the poll was about Facebook’s proposed revisions to its statement of rights and responsibilities and data use policy, and a response rate of 30 percent was needed to make the results binding, it’s a huge disappointment.
