Why Life Without Facebook’s News Feed Algorithm Would Suck

Facebook has an algorithm (externally known as EdgeRank) that determines who sees which posts at which times. It’s meant to present users the content with which they’ll be most likely to engage. Many users hate it. Even more page administrators despise it. But can it actually help both? Yes. There’s already a site where every post (whether it’s from your best friend or a random brand) is weighted equally, and it’s called Twitter.

Visualizing Facebook’s Social Graph

It’s probably not surprising that when Facebook users are 21, most of their friends are also in that same age bracket. It’s also not a shocker to say that men talk about sports on Facebook more than women. But how do trends change over time? Do 30-year-olds tend to talk about health more than new high-school graduates? A highly visual set of data from Wolfram Alpha brings Facebook’s social graph to life, showing how people connect and relate to each other on the social network.

Facebook Can Complicate Family Issues

A Bay Area psychologist told The New York Times that he often hears patients talking about how they heard about a birth or wedding in the family through the social network, and not with a phone call or in-person visit.

'My Wife, Her High School Love Reunited on Facebook!'

(As told to Ruth Manuel-Logan)

I consider myself to be a pretty educated guy, smart, personable. I’m a great dad and have tried to be a caring husband. I’ve never been one to hang out with the guys. Not a boozer. Never been a womanizer, not even in my single days. My life basically revolves around my wife and kids, and that’s how I’ve kind of always pictured my life to be. Corny? OK. Nothing wrong with being an average Joe — I’ll accept the banner and wear it proudly! So how is it that my wife is filing for divorce. My two worlds, our 7-year-old twin boys, are living with her. How did it all come to this? Facebook!

Facebook's Gift To Mothers: Family Profile Information

Facebook has been continuing their pursuit of offering more services for families to connect with the addition of a “Family Members” section. Back in March I wrote how Facebook had begun targeting families most likely to drive new users. It also appears to be another move against existing family applications, the largest of which is currently “We’re Related”.

HotPrints, the photo application that lets you create, print and send albums from your existing images on Facebook, is revealing new themes with its updated offerings. The two new themes are the Family Memories Book and the Baby Book. These are both family-oriented photobooks, aimed at a demographic different from the themes HotPrints started out with.
