How The Equality Symbol Spread Through Facebook

On March 26, several people all over Facebook changed their profile photos to red and light-shaded equality signs in support of the Human Rights Campaign and same-sex marriage. While Facebook couldn’t track specifically the numbers of those who changed their profile pictures to this image, the site’s data science team tracked how many users changed their profile photos that day — an increase of 120 percent.

Facebook users who are puzzled by seeing red equal signs all over their News Feeds, here’s what they’re all about: With the Supreme Court hearing arguments Tuesday on California’s Proposition 8, which mandates that the state recognize only marriages between men and women, Human Rights Campaign is urging Facebook users who support same-sex marriage to change their profile pictures to the red equal sign image.
