Washington Gov. Jay Inslee signed a bill Tuesday that bans employers from demanding that employees or job candidates surrender their passwords to Facebook, Twitter, and other social networks, as well as from requiring employees to add managers as friends or contacts, AP reported.

The Password Protection Act of 2012 — which was introduced in both the Senate and House of Representatives last May, but not acted upon and sent to committee — was the subject of an amendment at the House Labor Committee that would make an exception to the prohibition of employers requesting the Facebook passwords of employees or applicants in the event of company investigations.

Want to let your utilities company know that the power is out? There’s a Facebook app for that. Chicago-based ComEd announced Tuesday that it has released a Facebook application that allows customers to report power outages. By clicking on the “Report an Outage” tab on ComEd’s Facebook page, users can let the company know when and where they’ve lost power. Users can also check on the status of outages through the app, which ComEd claims is the first of its kind.

U.S. Senate Assistant Majority Leader Richard Durbin of Illinois asked Facebook Chief Executive Officer to allow users to choose anonymity, invoking the political situations in Egypt and Tunisia just a day before the former achieved freedom. Even without the “crossed wires” effect of today’s victory in Egypt led by activists who didn’t remain anonymous at all, his request seems a bit out of touch with Facebook’s intention of promoting safety on the social network.
