Facebook is looking to extend its reach into Hollywood’s television industry with its newest hire, Ryan Seacrest Productions Executive Vice President of New Media Sibyl Goldman, who joined the social network as head of entertainment partnerships, based at its office in the Playa Vista area of Los Angeles.
Facebook and Instagram demonstrated their Olympic spirit by reaching a deal with NBC Sports Group’s NBC Olympics to bring social elements to content from the 2014 Winter Olympic Games, which will be held in Sochi, Russia, Feb. 7 through 23.
Last month, SportStream CEO Bob Morgan spoke with AllFacebook about how the provider of real-time sports data planned to use the public feed application-programming interface and keyword insights API introduced by Facebook in September to incorporate its data into live broadcasts of sporting events. The two APIs are no longer the only Facebook resources available to SportStream, as the social network announced its acquisition of the company late Tuesday.
Facebook has introduced several new features in recent weeks aimed at aiding the media industry, including Stories to Share, and the public feed application-programming interface and keyword insights API, but the 1,500 or so online publishers tracked by NewsWhip’s Spike content-discovery tool were already well on their way to a content explosion on the social network, with the top 20 publishers seeing a staggering increase in social interactions (likes, comments, shares) of 288 percent between September 2012 and September 2013.
Fox Sports became the latest media entity to reach an agreement to use the two media-centric application-programming interfaces the social network introduced earlier this month, as Facebook and Fox Sports announced a six-month partnership deal Sunday, as reported by Mashable.
Twitter has company in the real-time news-related social media arena, as Facebook Monday announced the rollout of two application-programming interfaces aimed at allowing news organizations to tap into its public posts in real-time: the public feed API, which displays a real-time feed of public posts for a specific word; and the keyword insights API, which tallies the total number of posts that mention a specific term during a specific time period, as well as enabling news organization to feature anonymous, aggregated results based on gender, age, and location.
Is there enough room for both Twitter-owned video-sharing application Vine and Video on Instagram, which was introduced at a press event Thursday at Facebook’s headquarters in Menlo Park, Calif.? Time will tell, but the jockeying for position began long before Facebook Co-Founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg and his counterpart at Instagram, Kevin Systrom, took the stage Thursday.
Following Facebook’s introduction of clickable hashtags Wednesday, Justin Osofsky, the social network’s director of platform partnerships and operations, focused on how hashtags will factor into discussions about television shows in a note on the Facebook + Media page.
Netflix users can finally link their accounts to their Facebook profiles following a long battle in Washington, D.C., which resulted in last December’s overhaul of the 1988 Video Privacy Protection Act, which had previously prevented video-rental companies from sharing users’ viewing data.
In recent days, Facebook has been cutting off data access to applications that have been using it in ways that either compete with or replicate what the social network does — first with Voxer, then Wonder, and most recently Vine. Facebook Director of Platform Partnerships and Operations Justin Osofsky clarified his company’s stance with regard to sharing data. In essence, apps that allow users to share data back to Facebook are OK, while those that do not violate the site’s platform policy.
