Many of Facebook’s more than 1 billion monthly active users would agree — the site is great, but could use some improvement. As users complain about ads, a cluttered and confusing interface, and several other things, there are a few things that Facebook could implement to make the site much more palatable. Facebook’s total monthly active users and daily active users continued to trend upward in the first quarter of 2013, reaching 1.11 billion and 665 million, respectively, as of March 31, but growth in the core markets of the U.S. and Canada has slowed considerably, with the bulk of new MAUs and DAUs coming from Asia and the rest of the world, not including Europe.

Local businesses are thriving on Facebook, according to statistics released Friday by Dan Levy, director of small business at the social network, who said more than 2 billion connections exist on Facebook between users and local businesses, adding that approximately 70 percent of monthly active users in the U.S. and Canada are connected to local businesses.

YouTube Reaches 1B Unique Monthly Users

Facebook has company in the billionaires’ club, as Google-owned video site YouTube announced in a post on its blog that it has reached 1 billion unique monthly users. Of course, Facebook had 1.06 billion monthly active users as of Dec. 31, 2012, and MAUs are more specific than unique users. But 1 billion is still an impressive number.

Facebook Co-Founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg has said ad nauseum that the social network is becoming a mobile company. It appears that the statement has finally come true. As announced during Wednesday’s fourth-quarter earnings report, Facebook now has more people accessing the site via phones and tablets than via desktop. Zuckerberg said (but did not elaborate) during the earnings call that the company is developing mobile-first projects that will make the experience better for both users and advertisers.
