We all heard the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) keynote in June announcing all of the exciting new features of iOS 6. In addition to Siri’s new powers, the deep Facebook integration has developers and iPhone users drooling. However, very little was discussed regarding the Facebook like functionality in the iTunes App Store. Although this feature isn’t as sexy, I believe that this integration is a game-changer.

Facebook-Apple Integration: Now What?

Now that the details are out about Facebook’s integration into Apple’s iOS 6 and OSX Mountain Lion operating systems for mobile devices and Macintosh desktops, respectively, the reactions are pouring in, from concerns about oversharing , to Apple finally having a social solution besides its ill-fated Ping, and even a tweak to the name of a new application .

Yesterday Apple announced Ping, a network which many have suggested will replace MySpace and present a new competitor to Facebook. However Apple’s first shot at building a social network has many flaws. As such, there are many areas that the company needs to improve before it can be considered a legitimate competitor to Facebook. With a physical platform of distribution however, if Apple can fix the product’s flaws, there’s no doubt they could rise to become the most legitimate Facebook competitor.

Apple announced a massive new service today called Ping. It appears to be a direct replacement of iLike, and it combines many of the technologies developed by Facebook, combined with Last.fm and Twitter. Most significant is that it doesn’t have any Facebook integration yet. As far as I’m concerned, Apple has also just become a direct Facebook competitor. While they don’t have the user base of Facebook, they are a force to be reckoned with and they have a platform which has already taken developers away from Facebook.
