REPORT: Teens Still Use Facebook (And Can Master Privacy Settings)

Yes, teenagers use Facebook. And although whether or not they’ll be using Facebook in a few years remains to be seen, the site does have a considerable presence among high-school students. The Pew Research Center recently examined how teens use social media, finding that they don’t like drama and having their parents connected to them, but they stay on Facebook because it plays a key part in the social experience. However, Facebook’s youngest users tend to have no problem configuring privacy settings.

People Aren’t Stealing Your Facebook Photos: A Lesson In Privacy

A new rumor has been sweeping Facebook — that people are stealing photos of users’ children and posting them to a page called “Infancy.” The status that I saw — which had been shared 600 times back then and more than 3,500 times at the time of writing — claimed that “loads of local kids” were shown, including the author’s own, and demanded the removal of the page. But here’s the deal: The page was automatically generated by Facebook, like this one about rock climbing or this one about food. In fact, above the photographs, it even said, “photos of my friends and infancy.”

Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg Admits That Privacy Changes Have Been Confusing

One of the chief complaints among Facebook users is that the changes to privacy controls have been far too confusing, with little effort in educating the users. Facebook’s No. 2 official — Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg — agrees. She admitted during a launch party in London for her book, Lean In, that one of the key mistakes the company has made was not explaining privacy controls better.

Facebook Testing Separate Screens For Different Mobile App Permission Requests

When Facebook announced last December that it would roll out new privacy options for users, the social network also said it would change the permissions process for applications, requiring them to break down information they were seeking access to in multiple screens, rather than bunching all of the information together in one permissions screen. Now different renditions of this are being tested.

HOW TO: Control What Facebook Apps Post On Your Behalf

Odds are, if you’ve connected with an application on Facebook, you’ve seen the familiar warning that it can post to your Timeline and on friends’ News Feeds on your behalf. There’s a way you can go back and fix this through the activity log, so the app’s activity can only be seen by you. You can also remove the app if you don’t want it to have access to your profile anymore.

HOW TO: Control Who Sees Your Facebook Posts

The default sharing option for new Facebook users is set to public, meaning that anyone can see posts, even if they don’t have Facebook accounts. There are a few simple ways that Facebook users can change that, to make sure that only their friends (or a select group of their friends) can see posts. Additionally, users can select friends to not see posts.

Facebook Pushes Privacy Education For Updated News Feed Users

Many users feel that Facebook isn’t doing enough with regard to educating them on their privacy settings. It appears that the social network is trying to do more in this field, as users who have the redesigned News Feed were prompted to review their privacy settings recently.

STUDY: Confusing Facebook Privacy Settings Lead To More Public Information

Even though Facebook’s privacy settings change often, a study by Carnegie Mellon University shows that more users are becoming better at keeping sensitive information off the social network. According to a study of more than 5,000 Facebook profiles, fewer users are making public information such as date of birth and political affiliation. However, confusion over Facebook’s privacy settings has led to an increase in posting of interests such as favorite movies, books, and music — as well as sharing to applications and advertisers.
