The page encourages attendees to pass along materials about the legislation to their friends, by leveraging Facebook’s share functionality. For example, attendees who have RSVP’d on Facebook can:

• Click on a link to share the event in their Facebook timeline and invite friends;
• Receive special updates throughout the day about the timing of the vote and debate, which will be streamed online;
• Share an infographic in their Facebook timeline that explains the amendment in greater detail.

The Facebook event page was created by Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA), co-chair of the Republican New Media Caucus and a long-time supporter of the amendment, and is co-hosted with Rep. Bob Goodlatte (R-VA), a co-sponsor of the legislation, and Rep. Mike Coffman (R-CO), Chairman of the Congressional Balanced Budget Amendment Caucus.

The Balanced Budget Amendment might sound straightforward: It would force the government not to spend more than it takes in unless three-fifths of the House approves. However, the parties are split in their support of the measure.

Democrats told the Associated Press that passing the amendment during an uncertain economic climate could cause taxes to go up, further job losses, and cuts to key social programs.

This isn’t the first time a balanced budget amendment has been introduced in the House.

However, this is the first time the amendment has been introduced in the age of Facebook. This is yet another issue where advocates on both sides feel strongly. Which means, Facebook will be one place to turn and watch a passionate debate unfold.
