The field of 68 teams in the 2014 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship tournament has been whittled down to 16, and the regional semifinals tip off Thursday night. The Facebook Data Science Team created a map showing which Sweet 16 team tops each state in terms of Facebook mentions since the start of the tournament.

If you tend to like exercise- and activity-based Facebook pages, are you in shape? Conversely, do all of those likes of TV shows paint the picture of someone more obese? That’s what some researchers from Harvard University, Boston Children’s Hospital, and San Diego State University wanted to figure out. They took geographic data of Facebook likes, comparing them to obesity levels, finding that areas where more people liked TV shows on Facebook also tended to be areas with higher obesity rates.
While we may seem happy on Facebook, liking pages on a daily basis and posting inspirational photos, does the social network really bring us joy? That’s what researchers from San Diego State University and the University of Georgia wanted to find out. They believe that Facebook might be making us feel better about ourselves.
