Renewable energy is in the wind at Facebook, as the social network announced that when its data center in Altoona, Iowa, begins serving traffic in early 2015, the facility will be fully powered by a new wind energy project in nearby Wellsburg.
UPDATED: The final episode of AMC’s hit drama, “Breaking Bad,” aired Sunday night, and more than 3 million Facebook users generated more than 5.5 million interactions during the show, according to the social network, which added that in the series’ fifth and final season alone, there have been 23.68 million posts and interactions related to “Breaking Bad,” from 11.14 million unique users.

Since Facebook launched its bug bounty program two years ago, more than $1 million in rewards has been handed out to 329 people in 51 countries, Security Engineer Collin Greene reported in a note on the Facebook Security page.

Facebook reached 1.15 billion monthly active users as of June 30, up 21 percent compared with the second quarter of 2012, while daily active users were up 27 percent to 699 million, and mobile MAUs leaped by 51 percent to 819 million, the company reported as part of its second-quarter financial results.
Facebook is targeting businesses in the Europe, Middle East, and Africa that have not yet advertised on the social network with ads directing them to the Facebook Start to Success Program, which offers free support for first-time advertisers, as well as a £25 ($39.15) credit toward advertising.
Facebook’s newest data center, in Luleå, Sweden, went live Wednesday, and the social network said the new facility has the potential to be one of the world’s most efficient and sustainable data centers.
Facebook is going public with the results of its efficiency efforts at its data centers in Prineville, Ore., and Forest City, N.C., debuting two public dashboards that display real-time data for the data centers’ PUE (power usage effectiveness) and WUE (water usage effectiveness) levels.
Wrapp, which allows Facebook users to send free and paid electronic gift cards to their friends, has said that three new retailers have joined the fold: Victoria’s Secret, American Apparel, and Little Black Bag. Using Facebook as a platform, Wrapp noted that 1.25 million users of its iOS and Android applications have given 11.5 million digital gift cards — seen by 122 million Facebook users.
