Free hotel stays in exchange for airline miles or credit-card points have been common practice for quite some time, but what about free or discounted hotel stays based on Facebook likes or friends, or followers on Instagram?
People in the 13-through-24 age group are optimistic, want to learn about other countries and cultures, forward-looking, value friends and family, and use social media to stay in touch with those friends and family, according to a study by culture experts Crowd DNA, commissioned by Facebook.
Facebook teamed up with Boston Consulting Group to release a study in June on how its data center in Luleå, Sweden, is impacting the local economy, and the social network undertook a similar venture with RTI International to measure the economic effects of its data center in Forest City, N.C.
Facebook’s data center in Luleå, Sweden, will be the endpoint for more than 1,000 kilometers of fiber being rolled out in the northern part of the country by domestic carrier TeliaSonera, ZDNet reported.
Facebook debuted its I’m a Voter button during the 2012 U.S. elections, and the social network also deployed the button during the 2014 Lok Sabha elections in India last month. The initiative is now going worldwide, according to Reuters.
Facebook scored high marks in a recent report on the “green Internet” by Greenpeace, as the environmental organization called out the social network’s transparency on environmental issues, its usage of renewable energy at its data centers, and its creation of the Open Compute Project.
