Facebook’s data center in Luleå, Sweden, will be the endpoint for more than 1,000 kilometers of fiber being rolled out in the northern part of the country by domestic carrier TeliaSonera, ZDNet reported.
Facebook debuted its I’m a Voter button during the 2012 U.S. elections, and the social network also deployed the button during the 2014 Lok Sabha elections in India last month. The initiative is now going worldwide, according to Reuters.
Facebook scored high marks in a recent report on the “green Internet” by Greenpeace, as the environmental organization called out the social network’s transparency on environmental issues, its usage of renewable energy at its data centers, and its creation of the Open Compute Project.
The newly announced second building at Facebook’s data center in Luleå, Sweden, will be the first of the social network’s data centers to be built using its new rapid deployment data center concept, which leans on modular and lean construction principles, much like those demonstrated by Swedish furniture giant Ikea.
Facebook finally responded to calls for more specific data on monthly active users, daily active users, and mobile MAUs and DAUs by specific country, but only in a eMagazine distributed to its advertising partners, titled “Facebook: The Annual.” However, a copy was leaked to TechCrunch.
