Social-data and ad-targeting platform 140 Proof announced that it has been granted what one of its advisors referred to as the “Hope Diamond of social advertising patents,” U.S. Patent No. 8,751,305, titled, “Targeting Users Based on Persona Data.”
On the same day that Facebook released Paper, its new iPhone application, New York-based startup FiftyThree posted a statement on its website urging Facebook to change the app’s name, since it launched its own, well-established Paper app in March 2012.
Not so fast, Facebook. The social network recently gave Timeline a face lift, but it will now have to defend in court whether or not it has the naming rights over its profile product. The company is battling a lawsuit from Timelines.com., and U.S. District Judge John W. Darrah ruled recently that Facebook has not demonstrated that “timeline” is a generic enough term to own exclusively.
Did the late Joannes Jozef Everardus Van Der Meer invent timeline and the like button? Van Der Meer died in June 2004, shortly after Facebook debuted at Harvard University, but a lawsuit filed by Rembrandt IP Management on behalf of the late computer scientist’s family is aimed at proving that claim.
While Facebook has delayed the launch of timeline indefinitely, Timeline.com has divulged its stance in the trademark battle against Facebook over the term “timeline.”
