The winners of the 2015 Breakthrough Prizes in fundamental physics and life sciences, as well as mathematics, were presented with their awards at a gala earlier this week hosted by Seth MacFarlane, who was joined by Breakthrough Prize co-founders Sergey Brin (Google co-founder), Anne Wojcicki (Brin’s wife and founder of 23andMe), Jack Ma (Alibaba Group founder and executive chairman), Cathy Zhang (Ma’s wife), technology investor Yuri Milner, Julia Milner (Milner’s wife), Facebook co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan (Zuckerberg’s wife), with presenters including Kate Beckinsale, Benedict Cumberbatch, Cameron Diaz, Jon Hamm and Eddie Redmayne.

Study: Facebook Ads Have Little Effect On Political Campaign

As Election Day comes closer, you’re likely seeing political ads everywhere you turn — on front lawns, in newspapers, and on television. You’re likely also seeing them on Facebook, and not just for President Barack Obama and Gov. Mitt Romney. Two researchers studied the Facebook ads placed by a candidate running for a state legislature position, seeing if they helped his name recognition or likeability. Unfortunately, in this case, the Facebook ads barely moved the needle for the candidate.

Facebook’s Mobile Advertising Interface Was Built By Interns

Interns at Facebook are responsible for much more than getting coffee and making copies. They make valuable contributions. Peter Cottle, a graduate student at the University of California, Berkleley and future Facebook engineer, reflected on his internship with the social network, writing that himself and another intern were responsible for most of the work on the site’s first mobile advertising interface.
