The 2014 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship tournament came to a close Wednesday night, with the University of Connecticut’s 60-54 victory over the University of Kentucky at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, and Facebook announced in a Newsroom post that the 2014 version of March Madness spawned 46 million combined posts, comments, and likes between March 16 and April 7, from more than 15.3 million users.
The field of 68 teams in the 2014 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship tournament has been whittled down to 16, and the regional semifinals tip off Thursday night. The Facebook Data Science Team created a map showing which Sweet 16 team tops each state in terms of Facebook mentions since the start of the tournament.
Last March, social marketing solutions provider SocialCode pegged Duke University as the winner of the 2013 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship tournament, as did Facebook, both based on social data. They were both wrong, as the University of Louisville took home the trophy. This year, Facebook once again selected Duke as the victor in the 2014 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship tournament, based on the number of posts and words related to each school in the two weeks leading up to this past Sunday, when the field was selected. And now SocialCode followed suit, also going with the Blue Devils based on its study of “thousands of social signals.”
