Game developer Zynga and Facebook, once virtually intertwined, continue to drift further apart from each other, as Zynga announced in a post on its blog that while login with Facebook will still be an option for game players, it will no longer be a requirement starting next week.
The name Barbara C. Jacobs may not ring a bell for most readers, but the name of the assistant director for corporation finance at the Securities and Exchange Commission is definitely a familiar one in the offices of Facebook Chief Financial Officer David Ebersman and Fenwick & West, the social network’s law firm, as she and her staff were responsible for vetting the company’s initial public offering filing.
Facebook’s most valuable property is also the thing it can’t afford to sell: personal information. As Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg spoke about advertising and revenue at the IAB MIXX event Tuesday, The Wall Street Journal went deeper into the internal struggle between the value of Facebook’s treasure trove of users’ information and its promise to protect it.
Leading up to Facebook’s first-ever earnings call as a publicly traded company, which will be held Thursday at 5 p.m. ET/2 p.m. PT, the social network, through outside public-relations firm Brunswick Group, is trying to de-emphasize its actual financial results and focus on its accomplishments since going public May 18.
Facebook game developer Zynga launched Zynga.com as an option for users to play its games and still connect with Facebook while off the social network’s platform, but one element of Facebook found its way to Zynga.com: Facebook ads and sponsored stories.
Zynga said its games held eight of the top 10 spots on Facebook in terms of daily average users as of March 31, and the developer also touted the beta launch of its Zynga.com platform while reporting its financial results for the first quarter of 2012.
