Facebook Testing Trending Topics Module

Hashtags and trending topics: Must be Twitter, right? Not so fast: The Wall Street Journal reported that Facebook is testing a trending topics section in its News Feed, featuring hashtags that are popular at that moment.

A Facebook spokeswoman confirmed the test to the Journal, saying:

We are running a small test of a unit on News Feed. Right now, it is only available to a small percentage of U.S. users, and it is still in the early stages of development.

The module appears in the upper-right-hand corner of News Feed.

When Facebook introduced hashtags in June, it mentioned plans to roll out trending hashtags, saying in its announcement:

Hashtags are just the first step to help people more easily discover what others are saying about a specific topic and participate in public conversations. We’ll continue to roll out more features in the coming weeks and months, including trending hashtags and deeper insights, that help people discover more of the world’s conversations.

Readers: Have you seen the trending topics module in your News Feeds?
