In Washington State, You Can Register To Vote Through Facebook

Facebook pages love polls. You can vote for which slugger will win the Major League Baseball Home Run Derby, or say whether or not you expect to get lucky on Valentine’s Day. Could the day be far off when you can vote for a president through Facebook? Washington state may have taken the first step, as the government will soon allow Evergreen State residents to register to vote in this year’s election.

In an effort to reach out to more voters, Washington Secretary of State Sam Reed announced recently that residents can register to vote through the state’s election Facebook page, according to The National Journal. Although the social media campaign has not been launched officially yet, be on the lookout for it within the next week.

Shane Hamlin, the co-director of elections in Washington, feels that this is a good idea:

This is a great way to push the use of our online registration system. Especially for younger folks.

Washington’s Facebook push will happen in conjunction with Rock the Vote, which tries to motivate younger people to speak their mind through their ballots. The state has roughly 3.7 million registered voters and has seen a sharp increase since it launched online voter registration in 2008. Heather Smith, president of Rock the Vote, told The National Journal that if this works well in Washington, the organization then has a blueprint for other states.

Washington isn’t the only entity using Facebook during this year’s election. CNN recently announced that it will heavily integrate with Facebook, allowing people to easily share what they’re voting for. Socialbakers has also been tracking the social media influence of President Barack Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney.
