Site Warns: Think About What You Share On Facebook

Although not as jarring as Take This Lollipop, a site called “We know what you’re doing…” is compiling bunches of public Facebook statuses that people probably shouldn’t be sharing.

The project, started by an 18-year-old Web developer, was aimed to raise awareness about carelessly sharing information on Facebook. The site is broken down into four columns: Who wants to get fired? Who’s hung over? Who’s taking drugs? Who’s got a new phone number?

CNN spoke with the site’s creator, Callum Haywood, who lives in England:

I was very shocked at exactly what people reveal in their public Facebook posts, which is one of the reasons I started the site. If there were no relevant data to prove the point, then the website probably wouldn’t exist … I created the website to make people aware of the issues that it creates when they post such information on Facebook without any privacy settings enabled. The people featured on the site are most likely not aware that what they post as “public” can be seen by absolutely anybody, and that Facebook will happily give away this information to other websites via its graph API.

The site also examines Foursquare and Facebook check-ins, showing how when you share on Facebook that you’re at a ballgame or a bar or on vacation, it’s not just your close circle of friends that reads it — but the public at large (unless you’ve adjusted your security settings).

We know what you’re doing… follows in the footsteps of sites such as Confused.com and Please Rob Me, which posts public check-ins. So far, nearly 8,000 people have liked it on Facebook, and more than 2,900 have tweeted it.
