WORLD CUP: 17M+ Facebook Users Come To Life During Group Of Death, With 31M+ Interactions

WorldCupGroupGTotal650The “Group of Death” at 2014 FIFA World Cup 2014, Group G, wrapped up its games Thursday, with Germany and the U.S. moving on to the round of 16 following Germany’s 1-0 victory over the U.S., and the journey ending for Ghana and Portugal after the latter outlasted the former, 2-1. According to the Facebook Data Science Team, more than 17 million Facebook users were responsible for more than 31 million interactions (posts, comments, and likes) during Thursday’s matches.

In the U.S. alone, more than 3.8 million Facebook users accounted for more than 6 million interactions.

The two players that generated the most buzz during Thursday’s action were Thomas Müller of Germany and Michael Bradley of the U.S., and the top five social moments from the final Group G games were:

  1. The final whistle in the Germany-U.S. match.
  2. Cristiano Ronaldo scores in the 80th minute to give Portugal a 2-1 lead over Ghana.
  3. Müller scores his fourth goal of the World Cup, in the 55th minute, giving Germany a 1-0 lead over the U.S.
  4. The simultaneous kickoffs of both matches.
  5. An own goal by John Boye of Ghana gives Portgual a 1-0 lead in the 31st minute.

The top five demographic groups discussing Thursday’s games were:

  1. Men 18 through 24.
  2. Men 25 through 34.
  3. Men 35 through 44.
  4. Women 25 through 34.
  5. Women 18 through 24.

And the top five countries discussing Thursday’s play were:
