WORLD CUP: Univision Deportes Network To Feature Content From Facebook

2014FIFAWorldCupBrasil6502014 FIFA World Cup Brazil kicks off June 12 and runs through the championship game July 13, and Univision Deportes Network will provide exclusive Spanish-language in the U.S., including 24-hour coverage, as well as 56 live games (all 64 matches will be available via its Univision Deportes application). The Hispanic-targeted cable network also reached a partnership with Facebook to add content form the social network to its telecasts, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

THR reported that Univision will feature posts from athletes and teams, comments from fans, photos from Instagram, and Facebook data on trending topics, adding that social segments will appear during pregame coverage, as well as shows including “Univision Deportes Futbol Club,” “Contacto Deportivo,” and “Republica Mundialista.”

Facebook Partner Engineer Manager Bob Morgan – who joined the company when it acquired real-time sports-data provider SportStream last December (Morgan was its CEO) — told THR of the application-programming interfaces the social network developed for broadcasters to include real-time social content:

That’s an area that’s a big investment for us, to make sure that as these moments are happening in real-time, we can get that content and that data back to our partners.

And Univision Senior Vice President of Social Media David Beck told THR:

We want to give our fans a live experience and a more engaging experience, wherever they are. We have such an engaged audience on Facebook. We know they are interacting live during the broadcasting of these shows, and we want to pull all of that rich content and integrate it into the broadcast itself.

Our goal is to create more enriching experiences and to bring new fans in to watch these shows.
