WORLD CUP: Uruguay’s Upset Victory Over England Leads To 40M Facebook Interactions

UruguayFlagSoccerBall650The upset 2-1 victory by Uruguay over England in 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil Thursday led to more than 40 million interactions (posts, comments, and likes) by some 22 million Facebook users, according to the Facebook Data Science Team.

The loss eventually cost England a chance to advance to the tournament’s knockout round.

The two players who received the most global Facebook buzz were Luis Suárez of Uruguay and Wayne Rooney of England.

The top five social moments during the match were:

  1. The second goal by Suárez, in the 85th minute, which gave Uruguay a 2-1 lead.
  2. The final whistle.
  3. The first World Cup goal in Rooney’s career, in the 75th minute.
  4. The first goal by Suárez, a header off a feed from Edinson Cavani, which gave Uruguay a 1-0 lead in the 39th minute.
  5. The halftime whistle.

The top five demographics discussing the game on the social network were:

  1. Men 18 through 24.
  2. Men 25 through 34.
  3. Men 35 through 44.
  4. Women 25 through 34.
  5. Women 18 through 24.

And the top five countries talking about the match were:

  1. U.K.
  2. Brazil
  3. U.S.
