WORLD CUP: Team USA-Portugal Draw Results In 20M Interactions From 10M Facebook Users

WorldCupUSAPortugalStats650The dramatic 2-2 draw Sunday between the U.S. and Portugal at 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil, in which Portugal’s Silvestre Varela headed in the equalizer in the waning seconds of the game, resulted in approximately 20 million interactions (posts, comments, and likes) by some 10 million Facebook users, according to the Facebook Data Science Team.

In the U.S. alone, more than 4 million Facebook users were responsible for over 7 million interactions related to the match.

The players who were the subject of the most global buzz were Clint Dempsey of the U.S. and Cristiano Ronaldo of Portugal, and the top five social moments of the game were:

  1. Dempsey scores in the 81st minute to give the U.S. a 2-1 lead.
  2. Valera ties the match at 2-2 in the 95th minute.
  3. Jermaine Jones of Team USA scores in the 64th minute to tie the game at 1-1.
  4. Nani gives Portugal an early 1-0 lead with a goal in the fifth minute.
  5. Ronaldo is whistled offsides in the 86th minute.

The top five demographic groups discussing the match were:

  1. Men 25 through 34.
  2. Men 18 through 24.
  3. Men 35 through 44.
