We all know that Facebook Co-Founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg is one of the richest people in America, but he’s also one of the most generous. The Chronicle of Philanthropy announced Monday that Zuckerberg (along with his wife, Priscilla Chan) was the second-biggest American philanthropist in 2012, behind Warren Buffett.
Zuckerberg and Chan, who have a net worth of $9.6 billion, donated 18 million shares of Facebook stock (worth $498.8 million) to the Silicon Valley Community Foundation, which works to support education and health programs.
The Chronicle of Philanthropy notes that this is the second large donation that Zuckerberg has made in recent years. In 2010, he pledged $100 million to create Startup: Education, which supports programs that improve public schools in Newark, N.J.
The top American philanthropist, Buffett, donated roughly $3.1 billion in 2012 to the Howard G. Buffett Foundation, NoVo Foundation, and the Sherwood Foundation. He’s worth $46 billion, according to Forbes.
