Zuckerberg Talks IPhone, Wardrobe With NBC’s Matt Lauer

Facebook Co-Founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg doesn’t make too many public appearances. About a month ago, he appeared at TechCrunch’s Disrupt event in San Francisco, answering questions about the company’s stock value, mobile and search. Zuckerberg will appear on NBC’s “Today” Thursday morning, but excerpts released Tuesday didn’t hint at any big revelations being uncovered.

Among the topics Zuckerberg discussed with NBC’s Matt Lauer: his wardrobe, his responsibility as a CEO, and the new iPhone.

It might not surprise you that Zuckerberg isn’t exactly on the cutting edge of fashion. He’s made various magazines’ lists as one of the worst-dressed billionaires, and he has become known for being able to blend in with Harvard undergrads, wearing a hoodie, jeans, and sneakers. Then again, he’s just fine with that. Zuckerberg enjoys the simplicity of his look.

Zuckerberg isn’t really big on variation:

ZUCKERBERG:
But I try to keep everything just simple besides that, all right? So I mean, my life outside of this is extremely simple. I mean, I wear the same thing every day, right? I mean, it’s literally, if you could see my closet at …

LAUER:
You have 12 of those T-shirts?

ZUCKERBERG:
… at home – about — maybe about 20. But literally, it’s like my closet is — and my wife has a bunch of stuff. Although she has her drawer — primarily scrubs for the hospital. And I get one drawer. And my drawer is about 20 of these …

LAUER:
Wait a second, are you telling me …

ZUCKERBERG:
… gray t-shirts.

LAUER:
At home you have one drawer?

ZUCKERBERG:
I have one drawer.

He also noted that Apple CEO Tim Cook sent Zuckerberg an iPhone 5, and he’s been playing around with it. Naturally, Zuckerberg toes the company line and says that Facebook is committed to creating an exceptional experience on all mobile platforms:

ZUCKERBERG:
You know, Tim actually sent one to me. It’s a wonderful device.

LAUER:
You got a freebee? You didn’t even have to pay anything, huh? So are you now an iPhone 5 user? Is that the phone you’ve got in your pocket or back on your desk?

ZUCKERBERG:
Well, I think I handed my phone to someone else before this interview. But I mean, I use all of them, right? So I mean, I’m a big …

LAUER:
Are you just not playing favorites here?

ZUCKERBERG:
No, well, I mean, if you think about it, I mean — iPhone is a great platform. There are more people who use Facebook on Android — because Android is just — more people use it, at this point. So it’s actually a pretty diverse ecosystem. And we spend our time building for all these different things.

The interview will air Thursday on NBC shows “Today” and “Rock Center with Brian Williams.”
